Lesson 9 - Review & Study Day

In this course, you will take a test every two weeks to test the skills and knowledge you have learned previously.

1.  Today, go back through Lessons 1 through 7 and study the concepts taught in each lesson.  

Be sure you know the following for tomorrow's test:

     - what RGB and CMYK stand for and what they are each primarily used for (Lesson 2)

     - study the names of the main parts of the body of your camera from the worksheets (Lesson 3)

     - know and be able to demonstrate the proper way to hold your camera (Lesson 4)

     - be able to write a paragraph explaining the basic difference between RAW and JPEG files (Lesson 5)

     - be able to demonstrate how to save a RAW file, open it in Raw Therapee, and convert it into a JPEG file (Lesson 6)

     - be able to demonstrate how to open a file in Adobe Lightroom's online program  (Lesson 7)

Lesson 8 - Learning About the Mode Dial

1.  Print the file found here:

2.  The file you just printed is the Mode Dial for the Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera.  
Take some time, and study this paper.  Have your camera in front of you, and study the mode dial on the actual camera.  Try to commit to memory what each different mode is for.


3.  Now, watch these videos to become more familiar the mode dial (keep in mind, your camera may differ just slightly from the video):

This video may be a little redundant, but it will help you to remember the different modes and may offer a slightly different perspective.

And, just one more.  This is for the 3i camera by Canon, and so it has an extra mode (A-dep), so just ignore that part.  This gentleman gives great examples of what each mode can do.  Take notes so that you can start practicing with taking shots next week!

Lesson 7 - Raw Therapee Practice & Adobe Lightroom

1.  Practice downloading 2 more RAW photographs from Wesaturate.

2.  Open each file in Raw Therapee and convert them to JPEG files.

Keep in mind, this lesson is not to teach you all the ins and outs of Raw Therapee, but to allow you to learn how to convert a RAW file to JPEG if you should decide you would like to shoot RAW photos throughout this course.

About Raw Therapee and Post Production Software

The industry standard for post-production software is usually a product made by Adobe - either Photoshop or Lightroom.   Adobe products tend to be very pricey, unless you buy older versions of the software on eBay.  However, it's important to try to get some experience using Lightroom (Lr).

Thankfully, Adobe has created a free, online version of Lightroom that anyone can use.  Your next assignment will be to try the online version and get slightly familiar with it:

3.  Go to the Adobe Lightroom website by clicking here.  Then click on "Try On the Web".   If you do not wish to create an Adobe ID, you can also sign in near the bottom using Facebook or your Google account (I used my Google account).

4.  Now, watch this video to become more familiar with the Adobe Lightroom online version.  (his version is older and will look slightly different, but you can gain a better understanding of the basics by watching it)

5.  Once you've watched the video, open the photos that you downloaded today from Wesaturate and attempt to edit and convert them from RAW to JPEG format.  Don't worry if you don't understand everything.  Again, these lessons are just to acquaint you briefly with post-production software.

Lesson 6 - Post Production Software & Raw Therapee

Today's lesson is photography post-production, or the editing of your photographs once they've been taken.  You will download a software program

1.  Read pages 22 - 24 in "Digital Photography Complete Course" by DK

2.  Download the photograph processing post-production software called Raw Therapee here:

3. Go to Wesaturate by clicking here and download a RAW photo file of your choice by clicking on the RAW button under the photos.  At the time of this posting, you do not have to sign up for the website to download a file.  

Please remember where you save the file to on your computer.  For many computers, the file will automatically download in to the "Downloads" folder on your computer.

4.  Now open the program Raw Therapee and try to open the RAW file that you downloaded from Wesaturate

Lesson 5 - RAW vs. JPEG and File Names

Today, you will learn the differences between RAW and JPEG files, naming your files, and creating a file system for your images.

1.  Read pages 20 & 21 in "Digital Photography Complete Course" by DK

2.  Watch the following video which break down RAW vs. JPEG files:

3.  Watch these two videos to see how to create and select a folder on your camera

 (note: this man is using a different model camera, but it will work the same way with a T6):

4.  Watch this video to give you a good tip on how to name files on your computer (not on the camera itself).  While you may not need to use this information yet, "file" it away for later (pun intended):

5.  Get your camera out and complete the following steps:

     a.  Create two new folders on your camera
     b.  Turn your camera off and then turn it on again
     c.  Can you now find the two folders you just made?

Lesson 4 - Using A Camera & Helpful Accessories

Today, you will learn how to properly hold your camera, as well as have a brief overview of camera accessories and shooting outside.

Lesson 3 - Anatomy of the DSLR Camera

Today, you will learn more about the external parts of the Canon EOS Rebel T6 camera.

1.  Open and print the following PDF file:

 The first two pages are pages from the actual Canon EOS Rebel T6 manual.  Study pages 26 and 27, while looking at your camera.

Then, fill in the blank pages.  You MAY use the manual pages to guide you and help you.  This activity is just to get your familiar with the different settings on your specific camera.

2.  Read pages 12-13 in "Digital Photography Complete Course" by DK

Please note that your camera will have different parts than the camera shown in the textbook. However, the main parts will remain the same (viewfinder, shutter button, battery compartment, etc.)

3.  File your worksheets in your Digital Photography Notebook
